Richard "Dick" Groat was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, in November 1930. He attended Duke University on a basketball scholarship and excelled in both basketball and baseball, earning All-American honors in both sports. He was later inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
Groat transitioned directly from college baseball to Major League Baseball. In June 1952, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates and was also selected by the Fort Wayne Pistons in the 1952 NBA draft.

Ben Wilson enlisted in the Army in January 1940. He was stationed in Hawaii during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and applied to Officer Candidate School (OCS) shortly after. He completed OCS at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1943. During World War II, Wilson remained in the United States, serving in training roles.

This week’s Veterans Spotlight shines on Grant Rhine, who enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 2005 and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, serving as a fire team leader and squad leader with the 2nd Marine Division. After four years, he pursued higher education at North Carolina State University, earning a bachelor's degree in English Literature.

This week’s Veterans Spotlight shines on William M. Bower was born in February 1917 in Ravenna, Ohio. He completed his education at Ravenna High School in 1934 and joined the Ohio National Guard in October 1936, two years after graduating. Before his enlistment, he studied at Hiram College and Kent State University. In the National Guard, he served with the 107th Cavalry until his honorable discharge in 1938.

This week’s Veterans Spotlight shines on Payton Onco, born in Lawton, Oklahoma. After graduating from Lawton High School in 2011, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He completed his training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego, CA, and Fort Lee, VA. Following his training, he was assigned to the 8th Engineer Support Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC.
