Alan Spielman

This week’s Veterans Spotlight shines on Alan Spielman.

Alan Spielman developed an early passion for electronics, which inspired him to join the U.S. Coast Guard in 1979 to pursue specialized training in the field.

His Coast Guard career, spanning from 1979 to 1988, saw him serve as an electronics technician. One of the highlights of his service was his assignment to the USCG Electronic Systems Support Detachment in Ketchikan, Alaska, from 1985 to 1988. In this role, Spielman traveled extensively across Alaska, ensuring the maintenance and repair of electronic systems aboard various Coast Guard vessels and aircraft.

Spielman encountered numerous challenges during his service, including a close call during a C-130 flight to Kodiak, Alaska. His technical expertise proved vital in preparing Coast Guard ships for refresher training and contributing to joint military exercises with other branches of the armed forces.

In recognition of his service, Spielman was awarded a Joint Service Commendation Medal along with several unit commendations. However, seeking more hands-on work as his responsibilities shifted with rank, he chose to leave the Coast Guard. He continued his career in communications, traveling the world as a commissioning engineer for high-power communications systems.

After the events of 9/11, Spielman felt a renewed sense of duty and volunteered for a mission in the Middle East. There, he played a critical role in establishing over-the-horizon communication systems to support coalition operations.

In civilian life, Spielman has taken on the role of Veteran resource representative for his company. He is also dedicated to preserving the stories of fellow service members, particularly those who served in World War II and the Korean War.

Thank you for your service!
