Douglas R. Macmillan

This week’s Veterans Spotlight shines on Douglas R. Macmillan.

This week’s Honoring Veterans Spotlight pays tribute to Army Veteran Douglas "Mac" Macmillan, who served from 1986 to 2015.

Macmillan graduated from Towson University in Towson, Maryland, with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology in June 1986. He earned a Master of Arts in Environmental Planning from the same university in 1993 and later, in July 2010, completed a master's degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.

After enlisting in 1986, Macmillan was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1987. Over his 29-year Army career, he held various roles within the Army Reserve, including positions in infantry, transportation, and logistics. In 2004, he deployed to Kuwait, where he served as the assistant operations officer for the 143rd U.S. Transport Command (TRANSCOM) at Camp Arifjan. In 2008, he took on the role of deputy commanding officer for the 55th Sustainment Brigade at Joint Base Balad in Iraq.

Macmillan received numerous awards and honors, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with three Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), and the National Defense Service Medal with a Service Star.

Macmillan retired as a colonel in 2015 and now enjoys time with his wife of 37 years and their daughter.
