Robert Barmore

This week’s Veterans Spotlight shines on Robert (Ken) Barmore.

In 1943, Robert (Ken) Barmore enlisted in the Air Force alongside his two closest friends. After completing training at Bennettsville Primary Flight School, he achieved his dream of becoming a B-24 Liberator pilot.

One of Barmore's most harrowing experiences occurred on May 5, 1944, during a bombing mission over Ploesti, Romania. His B-24 was struck, leaving two gunners critically injured. Barmore assisted the wounded crew members in parachuting to safety before escaping the burning plane himself. Sadly, the injured gunners later succumbed to their wounds. Barmore and the remaining crew were captured and held as prisoners of war (POW) in Bucharest.

Though he was recommended for a Silver Star for his bravery, he did not ultimately receive the honor.

After the war, Barmore became a pilot for United Airlines. When his flying career ended, he transitioned to a supervisory role, retiring after 30 years of service.

Barmore maintained close ties with his fellow veterans, regularly attending POW reunions and participating in the Air Force Association. He also developed a meaningful friendship with Princess Catherine Caradja of Romania, who expressed her gratitude for the American efforts to liberate her nation.

Barmore passed away in 2020, the last surviving member of his wartime crew.

Thank you for your service!
