Non-standard blade-jaw calipers with laterally thin blades have carbide-tipped measuring faces for determining outside diameters. Nib-jaw calipers, sometimes called workshop calipers, have a small, square tip rather than a pointed jaw and are used to measure inside diameters. Pointed jaws have very narrow tips that are used for determining outside measurements.
