Decarb-free tool steel is manufactured to prevent the buildup of surface oxide layers when heat treated. Decarb-free tool steels are a special class of high carbon, high chromium tools steel with small additions of alloying elements that inhibit the formation of free carbide on the surface during heat treating operations. D-2 (Air Hardening) is one such material commonly used to make decarb-free tool steel due to its high carbon content, high toughness, and excellent heat-treatability. A round made from D-2 (air-hardening) tool steel with a diameter of 1-1/4 and overall length of 36 has the necessary strength and hardness for making precision cutting tools such as gages, punches, dies, drills, and scissors. It is also used in applications where a higher polished finish on the working surface is required or where maximum edge retention and sharpness are important. The presence of alloying elements in decarb-free tool steels prevent the buildup of carbide at the surface, which leads to superior quality cutting tools with a smooth surface finish that resists galling, pitting, and corrosion.
